UWC PRESIDENT EUGENE CZOLIJ VISITS ARGENTINA
On the invitation of the Ukrainian Cultural Association Prosvita in the Republic of Argentina, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij visited Buenos Aires from November 28 to December 5, 2011.
While in Argentina, the UWC President and his wife Anna were accompanied by the President of the Main Council of the Ukrainian Central Representation (UCR) in the Republic of Argentina and the Vice President of the Ukrainian Cultural Association Prosvita, Jorge Danylyszyn.
On November 28, the UWC President met with the President and Vice President of the Ukrainian Cultural Association Prosvita, Román Nazaryk and Jorge Danylyszyn, who presented the cultural-educational mission and activities of the Association which has been active in Argentina since 1924.
On November 29, in conjunction with commemorative events marking the anniversary of the Holodomor, Eugene Czolij spoke about the genocide of the Ukrainian people in 1932-33 on the television program “Vis-à-Vis” with a viewership surpassing one half million.
On this day, he also participated in an award ceremony recognizing the contribution of UCR President Dr. Pedro Lylyk to education with an honour bestowed upon him by the City of Buenos Aires.
Following the ceremony, the UWC President signed the City’s registry and met with the Mayor, Mauricio Macri. Eugene Czolij presented the Mayor with a copy of the Holodomor documentary by Canadian director Yurij Luhovy, Genocide Revealed, and expressed gratitude for the support of the local administrationfor the Spanish-language publication Holodomor – Genocidio del pueblo ucraniano 1932‑33 (Holodomor – a genocide of the Ukrainian people 1932-33).
Eugene Czolij then participated in the official presentation of this book held in the City Hall cultural centre. The UWC President addressed the guests, acknowledging the formal recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian nation by the Houses of Representatives of the Provinces of Misiones, Buenos Aires and Chaco, the City Councils of the Cities of Avellaneda, Apóstoles, Berisso, Vicente López, Lomasde Zamora and San Martín, and the Mayor of Berazategui. Eugene Czolij also called upon the Republic of Argentina to recognize the Holodomor of 1932-33 as an act of genocide of the Ukrainian people. The UWC President also thanked the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Mauricio Macri, the Director for Institutional Relations, Claudio Avruj, and the coordinator of the publication, Jorge Danylyszyn, for the realization of this new book. Participating in this event were honorary consuls of Ukraine, Diego Muruñak from the Province of Misiones and Oscar Korovaichuk from the Provinces of Chaco and Formosa, as well as the President of the UCR in the Province of Misiones, Jorge Balanda, who was presented with 50 copies of the book for educational institutions in his province which has included the topic of the Holodomor in its curricula. Eugene Czolij discussed the possibility of future projects on the subject matter with Claudio Avruj and the City Council’s Director for Social Issues and Human Rights, Daniel Lipovetzky.
On November 30, the UWC President met with Ukraine’s Ambassador to Argentina, Oleksandr Taranenko. Eugene Czolij noted the introduction of visa-free travel between Argentina and Ukraine as a positive step, and discussed the issues of recognizing Ukrainian diplomas and pensions. In addition, he informed the Ambassador about UWC activities in support of Ukraine’s Euro integration and expressed concern about recent events in Ukraine related to the violations of human rights and freedoms, in particular the persecution of political opponents.
On this day, the UWC President paid tribute to Taras Shevchenko at the monument in his name and prayed for the victims of the Holodomor before a memorial plaque in their memory at the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral.
A meeting was held with the administrator of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), Father Vadym Drobnicia, the President of the Holy Protection Brotherhood Arsenio Sozonyk, and the parishioners of the UAOC of the Holy Protection, during which participants discussed local church matters, current events in Ukraine and the work of the UWC.
The UWC President continued to get acquainted withthe Ukrainian community life during a visit to the Cultural Centre of the Ukrainian Renaissance Association (Vidrodzhennia) and the Ukrainian Women’s Renaissance Organization. He had an opportunity to meet the membership and presidents of these organizations, Juan Regueyand Alicia Lesiuk-Drebnica.
On December 1, Eugene Czolij met at the Ukrainian Cathedral of the Holy Protection with the Apostolic Administrator of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, Bishop Daniel Kozlinski. They discussed the Bishop’s recent arrival in Argentina and the significance of a close relationship between the Church and the Ukrainian community. Bishop Daniel and Eugene Czolij were then joined by the Vice President of the St. Sofia Brotherhood, Antonia Dowbnia-Hurenok, and the organization’s membership for a discussion about parish activities and the work of the UWC.
The UWC President familiarized himself with youth issues during a visit to the Ukrainian Youth Association Plast centre. Plast President Xenia Baluk, joined by executive members, presented the activities of the organization, highlighting preparations for Plast’s centennial celebrations.
On December 2, the UWC President participated in a conference organized by the UCR and chaired by UCR Vice President Maria Zinko. Eugene Czolij delivered a speech focusing on UWC activities and calling upon the Ukrainian community in Argentina for continued cooperation. Following the conference he joined the UCR executive for a reception.
On December 3, Eugene Czolij discussed specific avenues of future cooperation with the UCR President and Vice President, Dr. Pedro Lylyk and Maria Zinko.
During a visit to the Prosvita Cultural Centre, the UWC President viewed a photo exhibit on the Holodomor, an artistic cultural exhibit, and learned about the Taras Shevchenko Bandurist Ensemble under the direction of Alejandro Beregovoy and the Ukrainian dance group Prosvita under the artistic direction of Sergio Jaremko and Irene Berezowsky.
On December 4, the UWC President visited the Ukrainian cemetery managed by the Taras Shevchenko Foundation. Miguel Kluba, Víctor Agres та María Morozs hared the history of the cemetery.
Eugene Czolij then travelled to the recreational site Veselka where he participated in various community events in conjunction with the celebration of Prosvita Day.
The day began with Divine Liturgy celebrated by Bishop Daniel and the Ukrainian Cathedral parish priest, Father Luis Glinka. He laid a wreath in memory of fallen Ukrainian heroes and the victims of the Holodomor, and delivered the key note address, following which he joined the Ukrainian Youth Association (UYA) parade.
Throughout the day the UWC President had the opportunity to discuss a broad spectrum of community issues. He discussed the upcoming Congress of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) with the WFUWO President for South America and President of the Women’s Association Prosvita, Maria Moroz, Ukrainian youth issues with UYA President Fernando Lesyk, and current issues concerning the Ukrainian Cathedral of the Holy Protection with Father Luis Glinka.
The day’s events also included a jubilee concert during which Eugene Czolij extended greetings to the many cultural ensembles which are active under the auspices of the Ukrainian Cultural Association Prosvita branches, with special mention of the Taras Shevchenko Bandurist Ensemble and the Ukrainian dance ensemble Prosvita, both of which are celebrating their 50th anniversaries.

Desde el 28 de agosto al 5 de diciembre de 2011 el Presidente del Congreso Mundial Ucranio (SKU) Eugene Czolij visitó Buenos Aires por invitación de la Asociación Ucrania de Cultura “Prosvita” en la República Argentina.
El Presidente de SKU junto a su esposa Anna fue acompañado por el Presidente del Consejo Superior de la Representación Central Ucrania (RCU) en la República Argentina y Vicepresidente de la Asociación Ucrania de Cultura “Prosvita” Jorge Danylyszyn.
El 28 de agosto el Presidente de SKU se reunió con el Presidente y el Vice de la Asociación Ucrania de Cultura “Prosvita”, Román Nazaryk y Jorge Danylyszyn quienes le informaron sobre la dirección principal del trabajo educativo-cultural de la asociación que ellos presiden, la que funciona exitosamente desde 1924 en la Argentina.
El 29 de agosto, en el marco de la recordación de las víctimas del Holodomor, Eugene Czolij relató sobre el genocidio del pueblo ucranio de 1932 – 1933 en el programa televisivo “Vis-a-Vis”, cuya audiencia supera el medio millón de personas.
Asimismo estuvo presente en la nominación por parte de la Legislatura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires del Presidente de la RCU el Dr. Pedro Lylyk, como personalidad destacada de la ciencia.
A continuación el Presidente de SKU firmó el libro de visitantes ilustres de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires y se reunió con el Jefe de Gobierno Mauricio Macri, a quien entregó el film documental “Okradena zemlia” (nota de traducción: “Tierra robada”) del cineasta canadiense Iuriy Luhovyi, agradeciéndole el apoyo para la publicación, en idioma español, del libro “Holodomor: genocidio del pueblo ucranio 1932-
Luego Eugene Czolij estuvo presente en la presentación del mencionado libro en el centro cultural de la ciudad. En su alocución en este acto, el Presidente de SKU manifestó su agradecimiento por el reconocimiento del Holodomor como genocidio del pueblo ucranio a la Cámara de Representantes de la Provincia de Misiones, a la Cámara de Diputados de la Provincia de Buenos Aires, a la Cámara de Diputados de la Provincia de Chaco, a los Consejos Deliberantes de las siguientes ciudades: Avellaneda, Apóstoles, Berisso, Vicente López, Lomas de Zamora y San Martín y al Intendente Municipal de Berazategui.
Eugene Czolij formuló un llamamiento para que la Argentina reconozca, a nivel de estado, el Holodomor de 1932-33 como genocidio del pueblo ucranio. Asimismo el Presidente de SKU agradeció la publicación del libro al Jefe de Gobierno de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires Mauricio Macri y al Director de Relaciones Institucionales Claudio Avruj como así también al responsable de la publicación Jorge Danylyszyn.
En este acto también estuvieron presentes los Cónsules Honorarios de la Provincia de Misiones Diego Muruñak y de las provincias de Chaco y Formosa Oscar Korovaichuk, como así también el Presidente de la Delegación Misiones de la RCU Jorge Balanda quien recibió cincuenta ejemplares de la publicación para la distribución en las escuelas de la provincia de Misiones, en las que el tema del Holodomor se encuentra incluido en la currícula educativa. Eugene Czolij conversó con Claudio Avruj y con el Secretario de Inclusión y Derechos Humanos de Gobierno de la Ciudad Daniel Lipovetzky la posibilidad de la realización de otros proyectos sobre este tema.
El 30 de agosto se concretó el encuentro entre el Presidente de SKU y el Embajador de Ucrania en la Argentina Oleksandr Taranenko. En el transcurso de la reunión Eugene Czolij destacó lo positivo del retiro del régimen de visados entre Argentina y Ucrania conversando además sobre el tema del reconocimiento de los diplomas de estudios y el sistema de pensiones. Además informó sobre la actividad de SKU y su apoyo a la eurointegración de Ucrania expresando su preocupación por los últimos acontecimientos en Ucrania relacionados a la violación de las libertades y los derechos humanos, en particular a la persecución política de los opositores.
Ese mismo día el Presidente de SKU rindió un homenaje a Tarás Shevchenko en el monumento que guarda su memoria y rezó una oración en la Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires frente a la placa recordatoria de las víctimas del Holodomor. Luego se llevó a cabo un encuentro con el Administrador de la Iglesia Autocéfala Ortodoxa Ucrania Padre Vadym Drobnytsya, con el Presidente de la Hermandad Santa Virgen Arsenio Sozonyk y los fieles de la Catedral Santa Virgen de la Iglesia Autocéfala Ortodoxa en el que se tocaron temas respecto de la vida religiosa local, sobre los acontecimientos en Ucrania y sobre la actividad de SKU.
El reconocimiento de la vida comunitaria local continuó con la visita del Presidente de SKU a la sede de la Asociación Ukraniana “Renacimiento” y la Organización de Mujeres “Renacimiento”, reuniéndose con los miembros de estas organizaciones encabezados por sus presidentes Juan Reguey y Alicia Drebnica.
El 1° de diciembre en la Catedral Santa María del Patrocinio Eugene Czolij mantuvo una reunión con el Obispo Daniel (Kozelinsky), Administrador Apostólico de la Eparquía Santa María del Patrocinio – con el que conversó sobre su reciente nominación y la importancia de una relación intensa entre la Comunidad y la Iglesia. A continuación y junto al Obispo, la Vicepresidente de la Hermandad Santa Sofía Antonia Dowbnia-Hurenok y miembros de la hermandad conversaron sobre aspectos de la vida parroquial y la actividad de SKU.
Sobre la situación de la vida juvenil el Presidente de SKU se informó en la reunión que sostuvo en la visita a la Sede de la Asociación Ucrania Plast Juvenil. La presidente de dicha institución Xenia Baluk y miembros de la comisión ejecutiva presentaron la actividad de su institución, destacando en particular los preparativos para el Festejo del 100° aniversario de Plast.
El 2 de diciembre el Presidente de SKU se presentó en la conferencia de la RCU conducida por la Vicepresidenta de la RCU María Zinko, presentando en su alocución la actividad de SKU y realizando un llamamiento a la Comunidad Ucrania de Argentina para una activa colaboración. A la finalización de este encuentro participó de una reunión de camaradería con la Comisión Ejecutiva de la RCU.
El 3 de diciembre se reunió con el Presidente y la Vicepresidenta de la RCU, Pedro Lylyk y María Zinko, conversando sobre aspectos concretos de la futura colaboración.
Ese mismo día, en el transcurso de la visita a la sede de la Asociación Ucrania “Prosvita”, el Presidente de SKU conoció la muestra sobre el Holodomor y una exposición de objetos folclóricos interiorizándose además sobre la actividad de la Capela de Banduristas Tarás Shevchenko dirigida por Alejandro Beregovoy y el Conjunto de Danzas folclóricas Ucranias “Prosvita” que dirigen Sergio Jaremko e Irene Berezowsky.
El 4 de diciembre el presidente de SKU visitó el Cementerio Ucranio, informándose sobre la historia del mismo en las personas de Miguel Kluba, Víctor Agres y María Moroz.
Luego el Presidente de SKU visitó el Centro Recreativo “Veselka” participando de varios eventos en el marco de este encuentro de la comunidad ucrania con motivo del “Día de Prosvita”.
En primera instancia el Presidente de SKU presenció la divina liturgia celebrada por el Obispo Daniel (Kozelinsky) asistido por el párroco de la Catedral Ucrania Luis Glinka. A continuación en la Plaza de los Héroes depositó ofrendas florales en los monumentos que los recuerdan y por las Víctimas del Holodomor, dando lectura a un discurso alegórico para incorporarse luego al acto realizado por la Asociación Juvenil Ucrania (SUM).
En el transcurso del día el Presidente de SKU tuvo oportunidad de conversar sobre diversos temas relacionados con la vida comunitaria: con la Presidente de SFUZO (N. de T. Federación Internacional de Organizaciones de Mujeres) para América Latina y Presidenta de la Unión de Mujeres “Prosvita” María Moroz sobre el futuro congreso de SFUZO; con el Presidente de SUM Fernando Lesyk sobre la actividad de la juventud ucrania; con el Padre Luis Glinka sobre aspectos relacionados con la Catedral Santa María del Patrocinio.
Ese mismo día Eugene Czolij estuvo presente en el festival en el transcurso del cual tuvo oportunidad de ver y saludar a los distintos conjuntos folclóricos que trabajan en las Filiales de la Asociación Ucrania de Cultura “Prosvita” y en particular a la Capela de Banduristas Tarás Shevchenko y el Conjunto de Danzas Folclóricas Ucranias “Prosvita” con motivo del quincuagésimo aniversario de su actividad.
