UWC president welcomes Ukraine’s new multiple citizenship resolution

Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), welcomed the Ukrainian government’s adoption of a resolution on multiple citizenship, which sets criteria for foreign countries with which Ukraine can implement a simplified citizenship process.

Speaking on state-broadcaster Suspilne, Grod called the decision a historic step that will help unite Ukrainians worldwide.

“We thank Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for their support and for bringing these critically important initiatives to life,” Grod said.

The UWC has worked for many years with Ukraine’s parliament and government to establish a clear framework for multiple citizenship.

“Today, nearly as many Ukrainians live outside Ukraine as within the country. This represents an incredible strength, helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty against Russian aggression on the international stage, while providing economic, military, and political support,” he said.

Grod highlighted the importance of allowing millions of Ukrainians who were forced to flee the country to retain their Ukrainian passports, and enabling children born abroad to acquire Ukrainian citizenship without limiting their rights due to holding other passports.

On Oct. 8, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted the resolution establishing the criteria for foreign states eligible for a simplified citizenship process.
