The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomes the joint open letter of 6 November 2018 addressed by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) to Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel urging Germany to withdraw its backing of the controversial Nord Stream 2 (NS2) gas pipeline due to the serious concerns of a number of European countries and EU institutions.

The MEPs find it “more than obvious” that the NS2 project would have failed if it were not for the consistent support of the German government led by Chancellor Angela Merkel. The MEPs further state that, while a few Western companies and the Kremlin might benefit from the project, it would have “very destructive and corrupting political consequences”, compromising the unity, security, and energy independence of the EU, including Germany itself.

The MEPs pointed out that Germany’s support for NS2 runs counter to the will of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the majority of the Council of the EU. Therefore, because Germany’s position on the NS2 project does not align with the European principle of solidarity in decision-making, the MEPs urged the German Chancellor to “change course”.

This joint open letter was signed by about 100 European lawmakers and 20 politicians from different EU member states who represent a diverse spectrum of political views including environmentalists, center-rightists, liberal democrats and socialists.

“The Ukrainian World Congress welcomes the joint open letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel from European politicians condemning the controversial Nord Stream 2 project, which will provide another convenient opportunity for the Kremlin to blackmail and divide Europe,” said UWC President Eugene Czolij.
