#WeShallOvercome: Ukrainians around the world celebrate Shevchenko Days 2023

On March 9, Ukrainians worldwide celebrate the 209th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko, a brilliant artist whose words became prophetic for Ukrainians.

Traditionally, Shevchenko evenings, literary contests, and patriotic and artistic events take place worldwide in March.

To mark this year’s date, the Ukrainian World Congress invites you to unite under the common slogan #WeShallOvercome and make donations to support Ukraine’s defenders through the UWC’s initiative Unite With Ukraine  https://www.unitewithukraine.com/

On these Shevchenko days, your support is extremely important. We are fighting, #WeShallOvercome, and God is with us.

Below you will find information about events around the world:

The 7th annual Plast competition of Shevchenko’s poetry was held in Winnipeg, Canada, on March 5.

From March 6 to March 31, an exhibition dedicated to Taras Shevchenko is taking place at the University of Alberta’s Rutherford Library Galleria.

On March 9, the Central Union of Ukrainians in Germany (CUUG) is holding a charity event dedicated to the birthday of the Great Kobzar! Guests will be able to watch a film by Oleksandr Denysenko about the Ukrainian genius – “Taras. The Return”. The funds raised will go towards purchasing items for Ukrainian defenders or their families.

Earlier, the Central Union of Ukrainians in Germany announced a children’s drawing contest, “My Shevchenko,” on the life and work of the poet.

In the United Arab Emirates, in Dubai, on March 10, the VIII public Shevchenko readings will be held.  The event will be held at the Mall of Emirates (the DUCTAC theater) from 18:00 to 21:00. Those planning to perform a poetic, musical, or dance performance should complete the registration form.

On March 8, the traditional all-Georgian XVII Taras Shevchenko Poetry Recital Contest was held in Tbilisi, Georgia, organized by the Taras Shevchenko International Ukrainian Cultural and Educational Center, headed by Lina Tatarashvili, with the support of the Embassy of Ukraine in Georgia.

A flash mob will be held in Tallinn, Estonia, during which students of two Tallinn Ukrainian schools, Vabaduse kool and Räägu kool, will recite Shevchenko’s poems. The event will take place in the Rahva Raamat bookstore (third floor of the shopping center) on March 9, from 14.30 to 16.30. Afterwards, flowers will be laid at the Shevchenko oak tree.

On March 12, at 16:00, the Krzysztofory Palace on Rynek Główny Square in Krakow will host a Shevchenko concert. Children from various after-school clubs, the Hosanna Choir, bandura player Zoryana Hrybowska and others will perform on stage. “We invite you to plunge into the world of young Taras and learn more about him,” the organizers write.
