According to a recent survey, over 70% of Ukrainians hope that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) by 2030.

The survey, conducted by the KIIS and NDI, asked respondents about their desire and expectations regarding Ukraine’s membership in the EU and NATO. The results showed that 90% of respondents want Ukraine to join the EU by 2030, while 77% expect this to happen. Similarly, 84% of respondents desired to join NATO by 2030, with 71% expecting this to become a reality. The survey also revealed that most respondents believe Ukraine will need 2-5 years to join the EU, while 29% think it will take more than five years.

Additionally, compared to previous years, more respondents have realistic perceptions about the timeline for Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO.

According to Zhan Beleniuk, a member of the Ukrainian Parliament, 489 Ukrainian athletes have been killed as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He made this announcement at a presentation in Paris of a multimedia project called “Revived,” which aims to highlight the athletes who have become victims of Russian aggression. Beleniuk emphasized the importance of using platforms like the Olympics to inform the world about the truth of the war in Ukraine and the war crimes committed by Russia. He urged that all opportunities be taken to make this information known, as it is just as important as the performances at the Games. Beleniuk also noted the striking contrast between the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes at the Olympics, with only 15 Russian and 16 Belarusian athletes present.

Ukraine has successfully repatriated the bodies of 250 fallen defenders. The bodies were returned from various directions, including Luhansk, Bakhmut, Maryinka, Avdiivka, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Mariupol, and Horlivka, as well as from morgues in the aggressor state. The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, along with other organizations and international agencies, played a crucial role in the repatriation efforts. The transfer of the bodies was conducted in accordance with the Geneva Conventions, and after identification, the bodies will be taken to designated state institutions for further processing. Law enforcement agencies and forensic experts will carry out the identification process, after which the bodies will be handed over to the families for a dignified burial.

A limited number of F-16 fighter jets have reportedly arrived in Ukraine, but it will likely be several months before Ukraine can field them at scale. Western media reported on July 31 that the first batch of F-16s recently arrived in Ukraine and that Ukraine will receive more jets soon at an unspecified time.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis confirmed that an unspecified number of F-16s were in Ukraine on July 31 and recent footage purportedly shows an F-16 operating over Ukrainian airspace, but Ukrainian officials have declined to comment on the matter. Ukrainian officials have previously discussed their intention to use F-16 and other fixed-wing aircraft as part of Ukraine’s broader air defense umbrella in coordination with Ukraine’s existing air defense systems but have repeatedly stressed that Ukraine will need to receive a substantial number of jets in order to implement this vision.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western countries to support Ukraine’s ability to strike military targets within Russia during an interview on August 1 and noted that the survival of the Ukrainian state depends on Western support for long-range Ukrainian strikes into Russia.

Ukrainian forces will almost certainly not be willing or able to integrate F-16s into routine air defense or long-range strike missions until they receive additional jets.

Defender David Gasymov, with the call sign Fugas, died on July 6, 2023, while performing a combat mission near the city of Bakhmut, Donetsk Oblast. Two weeks before, the defender turned 26 years old.

David was from Bucha, Kyiv Oblast. He attended school #2. After 9th grade, he went to study to become an electrician. But he did not work in his specialty. He went in for boxing. He was a champion in this sport in the Kyiv Oblast. In 2016-2019, he did military service in the National Guard of Ukraine, participating in combat missions to defend the Motherland. Afterward, he worked as a taxi driver in Kyiv.

“I have four children. I am raising them alone. My husband and I divorced a long time ago. David was very different from all of them. He was energetic, joyful, cheerful. He was never sad. He had many plans and a lot of friends. He was known everywhere in Bucha. At the age of 13, he started earning money. He bought himself a moped. He helped his classmates if they had any difficult situations. I was always in a hurry. He was in a hurry to live, as if he felt something,” said Hanna’s mother.

After the start of the full-scale invasion in March 2022, David mobilized to the Azov regiment.

“Later he wrote to me: “I am already here. There is no turning back. I will go with the guys to the end.” When talking to his younger sister, he emphasized: “Whatever happens, you live, be happy and enjoy life.” Because he was like that. He had a girlfriend with whom he wanted to spend the rest of his life. When she moved to Germany, he always sent gifts on her birthday. In May 2023, he was given a 10-day vacation. But it was not enough to recover, given what they see and experience there. Although David didn’t talk much about it. He never complained. He always reassured me: “Everything will be fine, whatever happens to me. Don’t worry. I am doing my duty. I love you and our family.”

The last time we talked to him was when I was traveling to Spain with my children…”, – the defender’s mother said. David Gasymov was awarded the Order “For Courage” III degree. The defender was buried on July 12, 2023 in Bucha on the Alley of Heroes. The Hero is survived by his mother Anna Vitalievna, sister Sofia, brothers Emil and Adrian.
