The Brazilian state of Paraná hosted the premiere of the documentary film Rodyna (Family), which tells the stories of 22 Ukrainian scientists who were forced to leave Ukraine due to the war and pursue their research in Brazil.
The film was produced by the Araucária Foundation and the State University of Ponta Grossa, with support from the Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Higher Education.
Rodyna highlights the participation of Ukrainian researchers in the “Ukrainian Scientists Welcome” program launched after Russia’s full-scale invasion.
According to Miguel Sanches Neto, Rector of the University of Ponta Grossa, the arrival of these scientists underscores the international status of both the university and the state of Paraná.
The premiere took place in Curitiba with the participation of government officials, academics, and the documentary’s protagonists. The title Rodyna symbolizes the support and strong bonds that helped Ukrainians adapt and start a new life.
“It was difficult to leave my family in Ukraine, but here I was able to start over, and I dream of staying here forever,” said Ukrainian researcher Katherina Hodick, a program participant.
The roughly one-hour film features testimonials from the scientists, insights into their academic experiences, adaptation processes, and cultural ties between Ukraine and Brazil. Filming lasted over three years, with the crew visiting more than ten cities across the region.
Director Luciane Navarro said that the most striking aspect was the separation of families, but there was also joy in seeing loved ones reunited in Brazil.
The documentary is available on the State University of Ponta Grossa’s YouTube channel. The film’s materials will also be archived at the Cinemateca de Curitiba and the Ukrainian Immigration Museum, preserving this important story for future generations.
