The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has declared the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy persona non grata and ordered the diplomat to leave the country, Vira Konyk, president of the Congress of Ukrainians of Estonia, reported.
According to the ministry, the diplomat “engaged in direct and active efforts to undermine Estonia’s constitutional order and legal system, as well as to divide Estonian society,” Konyk wrote.
The ministry said that the secretary facilitated crimes against Estonia, including violations of the sanctions regime imposed upon Russia for its war mongering against Ukraine.
“When delivering the note, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Russian embassy representative that Estonia will not tolerate actions by Russia aimed at undermining our constitutional order and internal stability,” the statement said.
Tallinn also plans to inform its partners and allies of the decision.
The move complies with Article 9 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which allows any country to declare a diplomatic staff member persona non grata at any time without explanation.
