France supplies long-range missiles to Ukraine and prepares security deal

France will deliver to Ukraine 40 long-range Scalp missiles and “several hundred bombs,” announced the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. Additionally, Paris plans to sign a bilateral security guarantee deal with Kyiv, as reported by Reuters.

We are going to deliver a lot more equipment and help Ukraine with what it needs to defend its skies. I will go myself to Ukraine in February and finalise these texts,” said the French President.

Macron’s trip comes at the time when political infighting in the US and European Union has held up two major assistance packages for Ukraine, Reuters writes.

Macron emphasized that allowing Russia to defeat Ukraine is not acceptable, as it would jeopardize the security of Europe. Currently, Paris is working on finalizing a bilateral security agreement with Ukraine. French diplomatic sources have stated that the agreement will establish frameworks for providing long-term humanitarian aid, support for reconstruction, and military assistance.

On January 12, President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, signed a bilateral security agreement. The document marked the first step in implementing the NATO summit agreements, specifically focusing on actions in the event of a new armed attack by Russia. Currently, Ukraine has intensified negotiations with Canada. Ottawa has already provided Kyiv with the draft of the corresponding agreement.
