Ukraine signs security agreement with UK, deal with Canada pending

Ukraine persists in cooperating with its partners to conclude security agreements in adherence to the joint declaration of the G7 and Kyiv, as established at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July.

Following the signing of the security agreement with the United Kingdom, Ukraine has intensified negotiations with Canada. Ottawa has submitted the draft of the corresponding agreement to Kyiv, as reported by Natalka Cmoc, Ambassador of Canada to Ukraine.

“I am very glad to tell you that on Friday Canada sent a copy of the treaty draft to Ihor Zhovkva [Deputy Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine] to initiate more detailed discussions in the next couple of weeks and wrap up the talks between Ukraine and Canada,” Cmoc said in an interview with European Pravda.

Adopting such a security agreement will align with the commitments the two countries’ leaders made, emphasized Ambassador Cmoc. “As our Prime Minister Trudeau had shared with President Zelenskyy in their very important visit to Canada in September, our Prime Minister had said that Canada is committing to multi-year support, and putting that to paper, as well as making sure that Ukraine feels there is predictable support in the future as well,” said Cmoc.

On January 12th, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Rishi Sunak signed a bilateral security agreement.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Ukraine have successfully concluded negotiations at the Mariinskyi Palace in Kyiv, solidifying an Agreement on Security Co-operation. Notably, this document marks the initial step in implementing the resolutions established during the NATO summit. Of particular focus within the agreement is a dedicated section outlining the prescribed actions in response to any potential new armed attack by Russia.

“The security commitments of Great Britain under this document will be in effect until Ukraine joins NATO. Today, we stand side by side as friends and allies. This is a signal to the world: Ukraine is not alone. Glory to Ukraine,” announced Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also stated that the Ukrainian authorities plan to work with other countries in this direction. “We will continue to work with other international partners to ensure our security growth. Step by step, we make Ukraine stronger,” added Zelenskyy.
