A strong majority of Americans — 62 percent — believe the U.S. President Donald Trump administration should continue providing military support to Ukraine. This support spans voters from both the Democratic and Republican parties.
These findings come from a Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll, a joint project of Harvard University’s Center for American Political Studies and the sociological firm Harris Insights and Analytics.
“Sixty-two percent of voters believe the Trump administration should continue to provide weaponry to Ukraine and impose sanctions on Russia (Democrats: 71 percent; Republicans: 59 percent ; Independents: 56 percent),” the poll reads.
Additionally, 64 percent of Americans say the U.S. should offer Ukraine direct security guarantees if Ukraine agrees to make concessions to end the war with Russia. This view is shared across party lines.
“Fifty-nine percent of voters believe Trump has not been tough enough when dealing with Putin and the Russians,” the poll reads.
Meanwhile, 66 percent of respondents feel that Kremlin ruler Vladimir Putin is stalling and manipulating the U.S. and the West, while 62 percent believe that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy genuinely wants to end the war.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on May 20 that the U.S. has not stopped sending weapons to Ukraine, but current aid is limited to what Congress has previously approved.
No decisions have been made yet about new assistance.
