Nearly 70% of Americans support U.S. military aid to Ukraine and stronger sanctions against Russia, with support among Republicans even higher, according to a Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll.

The survey, conducted in early October among over 2,400 registered voters, found broad backing for additional economic restrictions on Moscow. Seventy-one percent of Democrats and 86% of Republicans support further economic sanctions to pressure Russia to end the war in Ukraine.

Additionally, 76% of Democrats and 86% of Republicans believe Europe should stop buying Russian oil and instead source it from the U.S.

Another notable trend concerns penalizing countries that continue trading with Russia. Fifty-five percent of Democrats and 66% of Republicans support imposing tariffs on such countries to limit funding for Russia’s economy.

The poll results indicate strong bipartisan support for decisive U.S. action on Ukraine and increased pressure on Russia.

“Very interesting data, especially the shift between Democratic and Republican voters. A poll by the same company in late August showed growing support among Republicans, but Democrats still dominated. This appears to be the first time in recent polls that the balance has shifted,” wrote Ostap Yarysh, a Ukrainian journalist in the U.S.
