Russia’s massive $1.1 trillion military buildup targets NATO, Ukraine’s intelligence chief says

KYIV – Russia is undertaking its largest military rearmament since the Soviet era that seeks to prepare for a direct confrontation with NATO by 2030, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov told media outlet “Moseichuk+.”

According to him, the Kremlin plans to pour more than $1.1 trillion on military modernization of its armed forces as part of this effort. He foresees a sweeping mobilization of Russia’s political, economic, and social systems toward a future large-scale war.

“The number one task […] is to prepare the Russian Federation for war with NATO by 2030. All these actions and budgets are directed toward that goal,” Budanov said.

As part of this buildup, Russia has already established two new military districts, in Moscow and Leningrad, and plans to form new divisions, brigades, and military units.

“Russia aims to undermine the current security and economic order. To achieve this, Moscow is expanding its presence in Africa, primarily through proxy forces such as the Wagner PMC and the ‘African Corps,’ while also supporting authoritarian regimes and terrorist groups worldwide,” Budanov said.
