‘The Power of a Global Ukrainian Community’: Make the impossible possible

The global Ukrainian community continues to be one of Ukraine’s key instruments of soft power. A notable example is the Ukrainian diaspora in the United States, which has achieved landmark successes that serve as a model for other communities.

This is highlighted in the third episode of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) special project, “The Power of a Global Ukrainian Community.” The series features conversations with Ukrainian leaders who share firsthand experiences of how coordinated efforts by diaspora communities abroad can influence the course of history.

The featured interviewee is former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valeriy Chaly. In the discussion, he details one of the community’s most significant achievements: the long campaign to have the United States officially recognize the Holodomor as genocide.

What once seemed impossible became reality through a clear strategy rooted in grassroots advocacy across all 50 states, led by the UWC, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America, and Ukraine’s Embassy.

By mobilizing communities first and then engaging Congress, advocates achieved a historic resolution that continues to shape global understanding of Ukraine today. “Public diplomacy abroad is an essential part of our struggle for victory,” Ambassador Chaly emphasizes. “The contribution of Ukrainians abroad is crucially important — and it deserves support.”

When Ukrainians combine their efforts, organize, and act together, their voice resonates with strength and influence on the global stage. Advocacy is effective only when communities are cohesive, well-organized, and remain active over the long term. This is precisely the raison d’etre of the UWC.
