Two members of the UK’s largest representative body for Ukrainians and individuals of Ukrainian descent founded in 1946 – the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) – received the highest honor of the Ukrainian World Congress — the St. Volodymyr the Great Medal.
Mykhailo Kuziw and Petro Kuziw formally received the award on May 11 by AUGB Chair Petro Rewko, following a decision to honor the activists by the UWC back in April 2023.
“Congratulations to two members of our community Mykhailo Kuziw and Petro Kuziw who received a prestigious award from the Ukrainian World Congress,” the AUGB said.
The St. Volodymyr the Great Medal is awarded for exceptional contributions to the development of Ukrainian life in the diaspora and in Ukraine, in line with the core mission of the UWC, which is to represent and promote the interests Ukrainian worldwide, and to support a free, democratic, and independent Ukraine.
The medal recognizes individuals who have made a meaningful impact on the Ukrainian community abroad, and or including Ukraine itself.
“The award is the ‘Volodymyr Velykyi Medal’ awarded by the Ukrainian World Congress to those worthy in our Ukrainian communities every four years,” the AUGB said.
Nominees are approved by a special commission that reviews all submitted applications and supporting materials. Last year, out of more than 280 nominations, only 14 percent – or 40 recipients – were selected.
The awardees were announced at the UWC Summit in Bucharest.
“This award is for their [Mykhailo’s and Petro’s] dedication, commitment and many years service to the Ukrainian Community in the UK promoting Ukrainian culture in the form of dance, music and song,” the AUGB said. “We are very proud of their achievement.”
