UAZA participated in Africa’s premier peace and security forum

The Ukrainian Association of South Africa (UAZA) participated in the 11th Tana High-Level Forum on Security in Africa, one of the foremost platforms for discussing peace, governance, and security.

The event took place in Bahir Dar and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from Oct. 24 to 26. The forum serves as one of Africa’s main platforms for open dialogue among heads of state, academics, and civil society representatives on issues of peace, security, and governance across the continent. Dzvinka Kachur, UWC Regional Vice President for Africa and co-founder of UAZA have raised the issues that are common to Ukraine and African states such as UNSC reform, Nuclear safety and the new types of warfare that Russia brings to Ukraine, which would further affect African continent.

“When we discuss global order, the Russian invasion of Ukraine inevitably comes into focus,” Kachur noted. “There is a need for African countries and Ukraine to work together for a more just and fairly represented international legal system that would  bring accountability and ensure sustainability, peace and development for all.”

This year’s forum focused on “Africa in an Evolving Global Order” a topic particularly relevant amid current challenges to multilateralism, accountability, and international law, Kachur added.

Kachur was participating in the Tana forum as a representative of Ukraine-South Africa civil society initiative that involves the Institute of Justice and Reconciliation (IJR), the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation (DLTLF), Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation (DIF) and UAZA. The initiative has produced three policy briefs that address the UN reform, Nuclear safety and security and children’s rights during the military conflict. During the Tana Forum the initiative shared critical issues on Just Peace for Ukraine in all African Union languages (English, French, Portuguese, Arabic and kiSwahili).

Ukraine’s experience is currently shaping the future of the global order. African countries recognise the importance of shared pan-African vision and how to respond to the aggression against a sovereign state. African countries have a long history of fighting for their sovereignty and freedom, thus many share sentiments with Ukraine’s fight for freedom,” UAZA said.

All efforts aimed to foster dialogue on joint vision for issues related to African countries and Ukraine on global governance and protection.
