UCC: Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail publishes Russian propaganda

The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has sharply criticized the Toronto-based newspaper The Globe and Mail for collaborating with former RT propagandist Anastasia Trofimova and publishing content that whitewashes Russia’s war crimes.

According to the UCC, by running a series of news pieces that defend Trofimova’s propaganda film Russians at War and the photo essay Putin’s War, which attempts to elicit sympathy for Russian soldiers, the publication has effectively abetted Russia’s information war campaign.

Particular outrage arose over Trofimova’s involvement in articles about the Akhmat Russian military unit.

The Russian Akhmat unit are well-known sadists with a long, sordid and well-documented record of war crimes, crimes against humanity and other outrages across several countries and several wars. The Globe and Mail, once again, completely ignores this record,” the UCC said.

The organization also encouraged Canadians to consider canceling their subscriptions as a form of civic protest.

The UCC also noted that just two days ago, Canada’s outgoing National Security Advisor Nathalie Drouin, warned that Russia’s information war against Canada is becoming increasingly effective. In this context, the UCC considers the decision by one of Canada’s leading media outlets to publish such content as a conscious contribution to this campaign.

The UCC urged the public to contact the editors of The Globe and Mail to demand adherence to journalistic standards and to refrain from disseminating material that legitimizes Russian aggression and its war crimes.
