The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the Ukrainian War Veterans Association of Canada (UWVA) will honor the memory of three Canadians who gave their lives defending Ukraine’s freedom as members of Ukraine’s International Legion.
The fallen soldiers will be posthumously awarded the Ukrainian Canadian Sacrifice Medal, which recognizes Canadian citizens who’ve been killed, wounded, or are missing in action while serving in Ukraine’s military against Russia’s invasion.
The medal will be presented in honor of: Mandeep Singh, of Ontario, was killed in action in October 2024 fighting in defense of Ukraine’s freedom; Patrick Mazerolle, of New Brunswick, has been missing in action, presumed deceased, since September 2025. He was fighting in defense of Ukraine’s freedom in Luhansk Region; Nolan Victor Durie, of Alberta, was killed in action in October 2025 fighting in defense of Ukraine’s freedom in the Donetsk region.
“The Ukrainian Canadian community is deeply grateful to Canadian heroes who joined the fight to defend Ukraine from Russia’s war. The courage and valour of these Canadian heroes will always be remembered,” said Taras Jackiw, chair of the Ukrainian Canadian Sacrifice Medal Committee. “We are honored to bestow this Medal to Canadians who defended Ukraine’s freedom. May their Memory Be Eternal. Вічная Пам’ять.”
The Ukrainian Canadian Sacrifice Medal was established by resolution of the XXVII Triennial Congress of Ukrainian Canadians in Winnipeg in fall 2022.
Representatives of the UCC, the UNWA, and local Ukrainian communities will present the medals to the families of the fallen in ceremonies held across Canada, in the communities that the recipients once called home.
