A scholarly article on the development of Ukrainian education in Australia and New Zealand, authored by UWC Vice President Nataliya Poshyvaylo-Towler, has been published in the anniversary issue of the academic journal American History & Politics.
Poshyvaylo-Towler, who oversees UWC activities in countries across South and Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, and Lebanon, focuses her research on “Formation and development of Ukrainian community schooling in the state of Victoria, Australia and in New Zealand (1947–2025).”
The study traces the history of weekly Ukrainian Saturday and Sunday schools from the first post–World War II waves of immigration through the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Special attention is given to the role of Ukrainian communities, churches, and civil society organizations in preserving national identity thousands of miles from Ukraine.
The article also provides a comparative analysis with the development of Ukrainian schools in the U.S., taking into account the geographic distance of Australia and New Zealand and the effects of integration processes.
