The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) extends sincere greetings to Ukrainian diplomats on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Ukrainian diplomatic service.

Exactly 100 years ago, on 22 December 1917, it was resolved during a meeting of the Government of the Ukrainian National Republic to create the first full-fledged state structure of the Ukrainian foreign service.

Representatives of the Ukrainian diplomacy at the time were forced to defend Ukrainian state interests under the conditions of Bolshevik aggression while attempting to assert Ukraine’s legal status. In addition to achieving Ukraine’s right to be independent and a full-fledged international player, the newly-created Ukrainian diplomatic service was tasked with building a state capable of establishing bilateral relations and defending its nationals abroad.

During the existence of the Ukrainian state in 1918-1919, a network of Ukrainian diplomatic representations was created: four embassies of the first rank in Germany, Austro-Hungary, Turkey and Bulgaria; two embassies of the second rank in Switzerland and Finland; and two missions in Romania and Scandinavian states.

Within a short period, the foundation for legal and institutional principles was laid, and norms for the diplomatic service of Ukraine were established in accordance with the European experience and international law.

Representing the UWC at the commemoration marking 100 years of the diplomatic service of Ukraine was Director of the UWC Mission to Ukraine Serhiy Kasyanchuk.

“The Ukrainian World Congress sincerely greets Ukrainian diplomats on this significant anniversary and re-affirms its commitment to continued cooperation with the Ukrainian foreign service in the promotion of Ukrainian interests around the world for the benefit of Ukraine and its people”, stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
