Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Aug. 20 awarded Ukrainian Canadian businessman and philanthropist Mr. James C. Temerty the “National Legend of Ukraine” distinction.
Established in 2021, the award is among Ukraine’s highest state honors. Temerty was recognized for his significant contribution to strengthening Ukraine–Canada relations and enhancing Ukraine’s standing on the global stage.
According to the President’s Office, Temerty, who is originally from the Donetsk region, has played a vital role in supporting Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“After the full-scale war began, he funded a program for students and educators from Ukraine in Toronto, supported the Olena Zelenska Foundation by allocating half a million dollars for generators for Ukrainian hospitals, educational institutions, and critical infrastructure, as well as assistance for residents of the liberated areas of the Kharkiv region. He also donated one million dollars for the reconstruction of a destroyed children’s creative and sports center in Borodyanka, Kyiv region,” the statement reads.
The Ukrainian World Congress warmly congratulated Temerty on receiving the honor, expressing deep gratitude for his extraordinary support of Ukrainian communities worldwide and his example for future generations.
This year’s other laureates include singer Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, First Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Hero of Ukraine, Volodymyr Horbulin, an SBU team recognized for Operation “Spider Web,” Olympic champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh, ballet dancer and choreographer Serge Lifar (posthumously), opera singer Liudmyla Monastyrska, artist Anatoly Kryvolap, military doctor and writer Andrii Semianiv, and People’s Artist of Ukraine and Hero of Ukraine Vasyl Zinkevych.
