On July 7, 2022, the Ukrainian Society of Brazil, SUBRAS, celebrates the 100th anniversary of its foundation.
We send our warmest congratulations to the incredible civic organization now supporting already the fifth generation of Ukrainians on the other side of the globe and creating an impressive Ukrainian world in Brazil.
SUBRAS operates in Curitiba, Paraná, the home to Brazil’s largest Ukrainian community. Ukrainian is the second official language in the municipality.
SUBRAS, led by Felipe Oresten, who is also the conductor of the Folclore Ukrainano Barvinok ensemble, makes the day-by-day history of Brazilian Ukrainians. It runs a women’s organization, a Saturday school, a museum, and a choir. Hopak from “Barvinok” in the tropics has become legendary as the ensemble has been touring the world for over 90 years.
After the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, “Barvinok” gave concerts in support of the Ukrainian people.
