The global Ukrainian community must prepare its top leaders to return and contribute to Ukraine’s reconstruction by taking on roles in public service, said Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), in an interview with Radio Liberty focused on Ukraine’s new multiple citizenship law.
“They must be ready to step in, serve the state, and contribute to their homeland — just as our parents taught us,” Grod said.
Grod emphasized that the UWC is focused on building a strong and enduring Ukrainian diaspora – one that fosters “conscious Ukrainians for many generations.”
According to Grod, this global network will play a crucial role in Ukraine’s future, especially now that the legal framework for holding multiple citizenships opens new opportunities for engagement.
“I know many Ukrainians living abroad who are deeply interested in helping with reconstruction. That doesn’t mean everyone will move back permanently, but many will return in various ways,” he said.
This may include starting businesses, teaching in schools and universities, or working in hospitals.
“It could be for a few weeks, a few years, or for life. But I see strong interest,” Grod observed.
He added that Ukraine’s rebuilding is already in progress and must happen daily as “Russians are destroying the country every single day.”
He continued: “This isn’t about rebuilding someday — it’s about rebuilding today…We must send a clear message to Ukrainians around the world: we’re calling on you, we’re inviting you. It’s time to think about returning and get ready.”
