The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomes the unanimous decision on 11 October 2016 of the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to develop a results-oriented mechanism to monitor the human rights violations in illegally occupied by the Russian Federation Crimea.

This decision fully supports the mandate of UNESCO to monitor human rights specifically in the areas of freedom of expression and press freedom, and the protection of minority rights.

“The UNESCO decision to actively address the deteriorating human rights situation in Crimea is a positive step in the direction of broader international engagement with residents of this peninsula who have been isolated from the outside world by the Russian occupying forces,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
