Wisconsin first in US to condemn deportation of Ukrainian children, community efforts applauded

Wisconsin has made history as the first U.S. state to adopt a resolution that condemns the abduction and forced deportation of Ukrainian children by the Russian Federation, the organization Wisconsin Ukrainians Inc. reported.

The resolution signifies a milestone in grassroots advocacy, illustrating how strong community networks can drive meaningful political action and amplify global human rights concerns at the state level.

This important initiative was made possible through the partnership between Nova Ukraine and Wisconsin Ukrainians, Inc., sending a powerful message that our state stands firmly for justice, truth, and the protection of innocent lives,” the organization said.

As part of the advocacy campaign, an immersive virtual reality (VR) exhibition titled, The War Close Project, was was launched at the Wisconsin State Capitol.

Visitors could experience the realities of war through 360-degree panoramic photos, drone footage, and 3D modeling, witnessing the scale of the genocide against the Ukrainian nation in a deeply personal and emotional way.

We are deeply grateful to all the lawmakers who co-sponsored this resolution and to our incredible community for their continued support and advocacy. Together, we raise our voices for those who cannot be heard,” the organization said.

The Illinois division of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America (UCCA) also expressed gratitude to Wisconsin’s Ukrainian community and to all legislators for their leadership. Over the past year, the Illinois Ukrainian community has forged close ties with their Wisconsin counterparts, strengthening advocacy networks across state lines.

Keeping Ukraine in the news and appealing to broader audiences is crucial for sustaining American support. We must remember that all politics are local and we are hoping that advocates in other states will carry the torch forward,” the UCCA Illinois said.

The Wisconsin resolution not only underscores the state’s commitment to human rights, but also demonstrates how coordinated, community-led advocacy can shape national awareness and policy.
