On December 9, a roundtable discussion on the protection of rights of ethnic Ukrainians in the Russian Federation took place in Kyiv. The discussion involved representatives of Ukrainian authorities, Ukrainian academic institutions and expert community.

The event was initiated by MP and chair of the “Ukrainians in the World”

association of MPs in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Sviatoslav Yurash,

by the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) and by the International Institute of Education,

Culture and Diaspora Relations (IECDR) of Lviv Polytechnic National University.

The participants discussed the current alarming situation with the Ukrainian ethnic minority in Russia, persecution, and violation of rights of Ukrainians by the Russian authorities, systemic policy of the Putin regime aimed at liquidation of Ukrainian organizations in various regions of Russia, and forceful assimilation of ethnic Ukrainians.

They also discussed possible ways and instruments of countering the Kremlin’s aggressive policy and the need to join efforts for a constant support of ethnic Ukrainian minority in Russia and protection of their rights at the international level.

The Ukrainian World Congress continues to advocate both internationally and in Ukraine to raise global awareness about the human rights violations and elimination of Ukrainian ethnic minority in the Russian Federation.
