The Ukrainian community in Spain paid tribute to veterans who competed in the international Strong Spirit’s Games that were held in Madrid on Sept. 27.
The Ukrainian Cultural Center in Valencia hosted a meeting with two Ukrainian defenders, Vasyl and Valerii, who travelled from Ukraine to take part in the adaptive sports tournament. The games, launched by Ukraine, assembled veterans from five countries: Ukraine, Spain, the U.S., Ireland, and Estonia.
The Ukrainian squad was composed of 62 combat veterans and service members who were injured in battle. Vasyl earned four medals, while Valerii brought home six.
“These are extraordinary people with extraordinary lives and remarkable strength of spirit,” said Mykhaylo Petrunyak, president of the Federation of Associations of Ukrainians in Spain.
The event was co-organized by veteran Ivan Vovk, head of the Patriotic Association “Volia” in Madrid, who had volunteered to fight in the war to defend the Ukrainian people and “has now returned to us,” Petrunyak said.
“These are extraordinary people with extraordinary lives and a spirit that is truly heavenly, shining with the desire to live and create. Their strength of spirit and willpower is remarkable!” Petrunyak said.
Attendees discussed the situation on the frontlines as well as community efforts to support Ukraine’s victory.
“Everyone agreed that today our shared goal is clear — to unite and achieve victory, driving the invaders out of Ukraine,” Petrunyak said.
The defenders also visited the local branch of “Plast.” The Federation of Associations of Ukrainians in Spain presented them with awards and certificates of appreciation.
“We agreed that we will not stop and will continue to increase support for Ukraine and advocate for the interests of the Ukrainian people. The fight for Ukraine continues at every step,” Petrunyak said.
The Ukrainian World Congress also congratulated the Ukrainian community in Spain on the opening of the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Valencia, which took place on Sept. 16.
