Ukrainians in UAE thank government for aiding release of POWs

The Ukrainian community of the United Arab Emirates expressed gratitude to the country’s government for taking an active role in the return of Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians from Russia. Approximately 250 people attended an event on August 24 in Abu Dhabi to mark the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, as reported by UWC Vice President for Middle East and Central Asia Yevheniy Semenov in an interview to The National.

There was a round of applause from all and a lot of gratitude to the UAE for their mediation that saw 115 Ukrainians return home,” said Mr Semenov.

This prisoner exchange was the 55th since the full-scale war began. The process was made possible under an agreement facilitated by the UAE. Overall, the country has been involved in negotiations for the seventh time, according to The National.

The gathering in Abu Dhabi involved representatives from diplomatic missions of Ukraine, Latvia, and Poland, as well as Ukrainians, UAE citizens, and representatives from other countries. Among the activities there was a children’s art exhibition from the “Mom, I see war” museum, a unity chain, various workshops, also Ukrainian songs and a celebration of national cuisine – offering attendees the chance to really experience Ukraine.

The goal was to create an experience to remind everyone that the desire for peace and tolerance is universal and so everyone can witness the strength of the Ukrainian people and feel our connection to our home. … It was also a call to emphasize unity, our heritage, cultural traditions and express our national identity,” summarized Semenov.
