On April 26, the world commemorates the 34th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. This tragedy brought devastation and suffering, as lives were lost, and families were uprooted. The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) mourns the victims of this disaster and pays tribute to the heroic firefighters and emergency responders. Their sacrifices and suffering must never be forgotten.

From the first days following the disaster, Ukrainian diaspora came together to provide aid for the disaster victims, primarily by supplying medicines and equipment. It also kept the international community informed of the events surrounding the explosion as they unfolded and later of Chornobyl’s after-effects. Diaspora organizations have advocated to include Chornobyl disaster on the UN agenda in 1986.

Today, millions of people still suffer the effects of Chornobyl’s deadly legacy. The UWC thanks the international government agencies and non-governmental organizations that, over the years, have provided technical and financial assistance, as well as humanitarian aid for the Ukrainian people.

Recent wildfires near the site of Chornobyl once again reminded the world of the grave effects which Ukraine continues to endure due to the Chornobyl disaster. We honour the courageous Ukrainian firefighters and first responders who once again came to the frontlines. We also call on the international community to continue to demonstrate solidarity in helping address the consequences of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster.

“Today let us remember in prayer all the victims of Chornobyl, all those who perished and who continue to suffer from its effects. The human dimension of this tragedy must never be forgotten” – stated Paul Grod, UWC President.
