UWC honors the memory of the Heroes of Kruty

Today, Jan. 29, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), together with Ukrainian communities around the world, honors the memory of the Heroes of Kruty — young Ukrainians who, 108 years ago, became a symbol of courage and self-sacrifice in the struggle for their country’s independence.

Students and volunteers, armed with only a few machine guns and a single cannon, stood against vastly outnumbered Russian Bolshevik forces and managed to delay their advance on Kyiv.

The Battle of Kruty lasted only a few hours, but its significance went far beyond any tactical victory or defeat. Thanks to the bravery of these young defenders, the government of the Ukrainian People’s Republic gained crucial time to sign the Brest-Litovsk Peace Treaty and secure international recognition of Ukraine’s independence.

Today, the story of Kruty carries renewed meaning. It reminds us that the fight for freedom often begins with small but resolute acts. At a time when Ukraine is defending its territorial integrity and statehood against Russian aggression, the example of the Heroes of Kruty continues to inspire new generations of Ukrainians with courage, unity, and a readiness to defend their land.

The memory of this sacrifice lives on in the hearts of Ukrainians worldwide. It unites us and shows that independence is not merely a right, but the result of bravery, resilience, and love for one’s country. The Heroes of Kruty proved that even young and poorly armed people can leave a lasting mark on history when they remain faithful to their homeland.

Today, we honor their sacrifice not only as a historical event, but as a powerful reminder: Ukraine is unbreakable, and its people are capable of withstanding any challenge.

Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!
