UWC President Eugene Czolij fulfills working visit to Ukraine

On 7 December 2016, on the invitation of Lviv Polytechnic National University, Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij fulfilled a working visit to Lviv, Ukraine, where he participated in events marking the 200th anniversary of this leading university, met with the Auxiliary Bishop of the Lviv Archeparchy of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Head of the Lviv Oblast Administration, the Mayor of Lviv, Vice Rector of Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU), the Academic Director of the UCU School of Rehabilitation Medicine and delivered a lecture on the work of the UWC to UCU students.

In the framework of commemorative events of the Lviv Polytechnic National University Eugene Czolij participated in a prayer service at St. George Cathedral, delivered greetings to the Gala Commemoration at the Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv National Opera and Ballet Theatre and discussed continued cooperation with the Rector of Lviv Polytechnic, Professor Dr. Yuriy Bobalo, whom he presented an icon of the Blessed Mother of God, and the Director of the International Institute of Education, Culture and Diaspora Relations, Dr. Iryna Kluchkovska.

During the various meetings the UWC President shared information on the main activities of the UWC and its network of Ukrainian community organizations in 53 countries with the primary focus on all-round support for Ukraine.  In addition, Eugene Czolij emphasized UWC cooperation on this issue with the international community, and the governing authorities and civil society of Ukraine, including that of Lviv. Also discussed were events scheduled for Lviv on 27-29 August 2017 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the UWC.

The UWC President directed particular attention to the importance of the development of the UCU School of Rehabilitation Medicine, founded by former UWC Director of Humanitarian Initiatives Dr. Ulana Suprun, currently Acting Minister of Health of Ukraine. In turn UCU Academic Director Volodymyr Holyk presented information on the work of the UCU School of Rehabilitation Medicine and the use of Western programs for teaching medical professionals in the area of rehabilitation in accordance with international standards. Volodymyr Holyk also noted that recently two of his colleagues returned from Estonia upon having earned international certificates in ergotherapy which will now enable them to teach this new specialty in the UCU School of Rehabilitation Medicine.

Accompanying the UWC President during his visit to Ukraine was Director of the UWC Mission to Ukraine Serhiy Kasyanchuk.

Also participating in individual meetings was Chair of the UWC International Educational Coordinating Council Oksana Wynnyckyj-Yusypovych.

“Today’s visit to Lviv confirmed that the cooperation of the UWC with the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Lviv, Lviv Polytechnic National University, the leadership of Lviv oblast and its civil society has become stronger and will ensure the effective realization of our mutual interests with respect to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
