Ukraine to develop Crimean Tatar language spelling

Ukraine will begin developing the spelling of the Crimean Tatar language. Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers approved the relevant order.

“Today, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a decree to develop the spelling of the Crimean Tatar language using the alphabet of this language based on the Latin script,” Ukraine’s government announced.

The State Service for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience and the Ministry of Education and Science are responsible for developing the new spelling. Linguists and representatives of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people will also participate in the process.

“The use of the Latin alphabet will facilitate the learning of the Crimean Tatar language by both ethnic Crimean Tatars and everyone else,” the Cabinet of Ministers said.

Approving the spelling will make it possible to standardize, study and preserve the Crimean Tatar language. The transition to Latin graphics has been ongoing since Ukraine gained independence.

This year, in March, the first meeting of the National Commission on the Crimean Tatar Language was held. It was, in particular, about ways to strengthen the authority of the Crimean Tatar language and promote its popularization in Ukraine and the world.
