President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed participants of the Global Ukrainian Summit in Bern and stressed the importance of unity among Ukrainian communities worldwide in supporting Ukraine, defending freedom, and preserving national identity.
In his address, the president emphasized the key role of Ukrainian communities in the fight against the Russian occupier and in Ukraine’s future reconstruction.
“Today, as Ukraine continues its unbreakable fight against the Russian occupier, you are helping our state by serving as its voice of truth and an example of unity,” Zelensky said.
The president thanked Ukrainians abroad who, since the first days of the full-scale invasion, have mobilized unprecedented humanitarian, financial, political, expert, and volunteer support. He also expressed special gratitude to the Ukrainian World Congress for its long-standing leadership and efforts to unite communities.
“The diaspora is our strong rear base and voice in the world, without which it is impossible to withstand and rebuild the country. In essence, millions of Ukrainians abroad act as one large team,” he said.
Zelensky noted that the role of the global Ukrainian community in rebuilding the country goes far beyond financial assistance.
“The role of the diaspora in Ukraine’s recovery is not just about money, but about bringing in global experience, connections, and cutting-edge technologies to rebuild a modern state. Our people abroad act as a key bridge between Ukraine and the world’s leading economies.”
The president also highlighted the issue of multiple citizenship, which opens new opportunities for ethnic Ukrainians.
“Now ethnic Ukrainians abroad can exercise their right to acquire Ukrainian citizenship while remaining citizens of another friendly country. This step allows millions of Ukrainians to be united by a passport with the trident into one big family for the victory and reconstruction of our homeland.”
Volodymyr Zelensky called on the global Ukrainian community to remain active and continue engaging with politicians in their countries of residence to strengthen international support for Ukraine.
The president outlined key priorities for diaspora advocacy efforts, including increasing military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, strengthening sanctions pressure on Russia, holding Russian political and military leadership personally and financially accountable, transferring frozen Russian assets to Ukraine’s reconstruction and compensation for victims, and accelerating the establishment of a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression.
“We all understand that this war must be ended as soon as possible, and that the enemy must be held accountable for what it has done. Ukraine needs a just peace and guaranteed security. Therefore, we must continue to act together, decisively and effectively,” Zelensky said.
In closing his address, the president told summit participants: “Only together can we stand firm, defend Ukraine, and defeat the enemy. Glory to Ukraine!”
