Belarus liquidates oldest political opposition association

The Supreme Court of Belarus liquidated the Belarusian People’s Front Party – the country’s oldest political association. Representatives of the organization oppose the regime of the self-proclaimed President Lukashenko.

The Ministry of Justice of Belarus filed the lawsuit for the liquidation of the association because the BPF Party did not submit documents for re-registration. However, the opposition forces currently cannot fulfill the terms of Minsk’s new legislation on political parties. It is impossible to collect the necessary number of signatures and open branches in conditions of repression.

Only three political parties completed the re-registration process. Earlier, the Supreme Court of Belarus already liquidated four other opposition associations; one more is on the way.

More than 1,200 public organizations have been liquidated in Belarus since 2021, the journalists of Zerkalo add.

The Belarusian People’s Front”party was founded by Zianon Pazniak in 1993, while the association’s roots go back to the public organization that existed in the late 1980s.

The opposition to the Lukashenko regime party advocates “for the development of society based on the principles of democracy, humanism and social justice, for the creation of a right-wing state, for the rejection of Lenin’s principles of national policy, for the real sovereignty of Belarus.”
