Romaniw: Ukrainians in Australia are lobbying for F-16s transfer

The Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations (AFUO) has been promoting the need for F-16s by the Armed Forces at the level of the Australian government. Representatives of the diaspora are lobbying for the supply of fighter jets to Ukraine, First Vice President of the Ukrainian World Congress and Co-Chair of the AFUO, Stefan Romaniw, said.

Australia is aware of the possible threats of Russian aggression to world security. Currently, the country is focusing on reviewing and replenishing its weapons stockpile. This complicates the process of providing aid to Ukraine, Romaniw noted.

“We are lobbying not only for [providing] F-16s, but also special ammunition [for the Armed Forces of Ukraine], which is produced in Australia,” UWC First Vice President added.

In May, the Australian Federation of Ukrainian Organisations thanked Sydney for the newly introduced sanctions against Russia but also emphasized the need for additional military assistance.

“It’s time for the Government to urgently review how it can step up and ensure the steady, consistent military support Ukraine needs to be able to defend itself and our common values. This is not the time to succumb to war fatigue. It is imperative for global security, peace and justice,” said AFUO Co-Chairs, Stefan Romaniw and Kateryna Argyrou.

Earlier, during a visit to London in May 2023, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announced the creation of a ‘fighter jet coalition’ – an informal organization to join the efforts of Ukraine’s partners in transferring F-16 fighter jets.
