Ukrainian Canadian Congress launches Youth Ambassadors Program

by Olha Simoroz, UCC Youth Ambassador from Montréal, Canada

This spring, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) launched the Youth Ambassadors program. This historic initiative serves as a platform for enthusiastic and driven young people, aiming to foster emerging leaders’ skills, policy awareness, and cultural understanding. The program empowers participants to undertake projects that address local Ukrainian community needs in Canada while also supporting Ukraine.

Ukrainians arrived in Canada 133 years ago. Over this long period, they worked tirelessly to organize the community life far from home, while supporting Ukraine in moments of crisis. Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) has been leading, coordinating and representing these efforts since 1940. Today, the UCC unites national, provincial, and local Ukrainian Canadian organizations under one umbrella.

The UCC’s legacy is shaped by the experiences and achievements of many previous generations. However, to ensure its strength for the years to come, the UCC needs young leaders at the table. The Youth Ambassadors program was created as a platform for young people who are ready to take up the mantle of advocacy.

Ihor Michalchyshyn, UCC CEO says, «by providing opportunities for mentorship, skill development, and leadership roles, UCC creates a new generation of passionate and capable leaders who are committed to advancing our organization’s mission and values.»

21 young people were chosen from all provinces and territories of Canada. Among the participants, there is a proportional representation of Ukrainians who have been living in Canada for a long time and newcomers. Such diversity enriches the program by allowing for a sharing of experiences and perspectives.

Engaging the New Generation of Leaders

Youth involvement is crucial for several reasons. Young people bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that can revitalize community initiatives. They are also more likely to engage their peers, creating a ripple effect of awareness and activism that is essential in today’s rapidly changing world.

The UCC Youth Ambassadors program will offer a range of opportunities for participants, including workshops, mentorship, and community outreach projects. Therefore, this program is not only a testament to the rich history of the Ukrainian community in Canada but also a vital step towards empowering the next generation of leaders who will advocate for Ukraine and its future.
