UKRAINIAN WORLD CONGRESS GREETINGS ON THE OCCASION OF THE 21ST ANNIVERSARY OF UKRAINE’S INDEPENDENCE

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) extends greetings to Ukrainians worldwide on the 21st anniversary of the historic proclamation of Ukraine’s independence which legislatively securedthe ancient aspirations of the Ukrainian people to live in an independent sovereign state.

The achievement of independence became a triumph over the many years of occupation, the ruthless destruction of any manifestation of the Ukrainian national spirit, genocide and famines, with which our enemies attempted to assimilate and keep Ukraine in eternal servitude.

One of the main goals of the UWC since its founding 45 years ago through 1991 was to present the world with the facts about the Soviet regime’s anti-Ukrainian activities and the state of occupied Ukraine, while doing everything possible to help the country regain its independence. With the proclamation of independence, the UWC actively developed activities with the goal of strengthening the independent Ukrainian state.

UWC calls upon all Ukrainians to protect the priceless gift of independence, to love and respect the Ukrainian language and culture, and to work with even greater dedication and perseverance for a national re-birth and the development of the Ukrainian state, particularly as various forces are attempting to revert the country to its colonial past.

The UWC is the international coordinating body for Ukrainian communities in the diaspora representing the interests of over 20 million Ukrainians. The UWC has member organizations in 32 countries and ties with Ukrainians in 15 additional countries. Founded in 1967 as a non-profit corporation, the UWC was recognized in 2003 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council as a non-governmental organization (NGO) with special consultative status.
