MEDIA RELEASE

Ukrainian World Congress observation mission

to further more open and transparent Presidential elections in Ukraine

The Central Election Commission of Ukraine has registered 236 international observers from the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) from 22 countries.

The majority of the UWC observers are experienced in monitoring the electoral process having been involved in previous elections, including the parliamentary elections on 28 October 2012 and repeat elections in five single-mandate electoral districts on 15 December 2013.

The UWC International Election Observation Mission to the Presidential Election on 25 May 2014 (UWC Mission) is the third largest international observation mission for these elections following the observation missions of the OSCE which numbers 1056 observers and the European Network of Election Monitoring Organisations with 382 observers.

On election day, UWC observers will monitor the electoral process in 21 Ukrainian oblasts, including the cities in which mayoral elections will be held.

The UWC Mission includes a group of youth from its member organization, the World Congress of Ukrainian Youth Organizations (WCUYO).

During the elections the UWC Mission will actively cooperate with the mission of another UWC member organization, the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America with 222 observers, and with observers from the Civil Network Opora and the Committee of Voters of Ukraine.

The Head of the UWC Mission is United States Federal Judge Bohdan Futey. The Chief Observer is Peter Sztyk and the Manager of the UWC Mission is Myroslav Hochak, President of the WCUYO.

One of the objectives of the UWC is to monitor democratic processes, including elections and referendums. As a result, the UWC consistently participates in observing electoral processes in Ukraine.

“As with former UWC election observation missions, the UWC is deploying a mission comprised of volunteers who will observe and report on these crucial elections in Ukraine. I believe that this is a testament to the quality of our mission and the dedication of our observers who have joined the UWC Mission from 22 countries to observe democracy in action as Ukraine strives to hold free and fair presidential elections on 25 May 2014,” stated UWC Head of Mission Bohdan Futey.
