The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calls upon the international community, including human rights organizations and journalists throughout the world, to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to release Ukrainian journalists unlawfully detained by the Russian Federation.

In late September 2016, Russian authorities in Moscow arrested and imprisoned Paris correspondent of the Ukrainian National News Agency Ukrinform Roman Sushchenko on charges of  “espionage”.

At present, pro-Ukrainian journalist and foreign correspondent for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty Mykola Semena remains under house arrest in illegally occupied by the Russian Federation Crimea. He was detained in April 2016, and in January 2017 was charged with “calling for action in violation of the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation,” an offense punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment.

“The Ukrainian World Congress calls upon the international community to increase pressure on the Russian Federation to immediately release the unlawfully imprisoned Ukrainian journalists Roman Sushchenko and Mykola Semena who are victims of the hybrid war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
