KYIV/TORONTO – The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Policy, Family, and Unity of Ukraine, announces the launch of a major global initiative, “Vyshyvanka Unites,” commemorating the 20th anniversary of World Vyshyvanka Day on May 21, 2026.
This year’s campaign aims to demonstrate the unbreakable unity of the Ukrainian people to the world and strengthen cultural diplomacy. The initiative will unite Ukrainian communities worldwide – from Paris to Abu Dhabi, and from Toronto to Nairobi.
“Today, the vyshyvanka is far more than a marker of our identity, it has become a global symbol of strength, resilience, and solidarity. When Ukrainians and our friends around the world wear the embroidered shirt, we send a powerful message: we stand together, united in our commitment to freedom and to Ukraine’s victory. The gift of a vyshyvanka is not only a gesture of gratitude, but a call to continue supporting Ukraine and the global Ukrainian community,” emphasized Paul Grod, President of the Ukrainian World Congress.
The Ministry of Social Policy, Family, and Unity of Ukraine underscores the state importance of the initiative as a tool for consolidating the global Ukrainian community and strengthening ties with Ukraine.
“Vyshyvanka Day is a meaningful opportunity for Ukrainians across the world to reflect on the history embodied in the vyshyvanka and to say loudly and proudly: we remain united, we maintain our connection with our country and with one another. Such shared initiatives are especially valuable, as they demonstrate the beauty and richness of our culture, our ability to preserve traditions while creating new meanings, to stay united and weave our personal stories into the common story of Ukraine,” said Ilona Havronska, Deputy Minister of Social Policy, Family and Unity of Ukraine for European Integration.
How to join the #VyshyvankaUnites campaign
- Global social media campaign: On May 21, post a photo in your vyshyvanka on social media using the hashtag #VyshyvankaUnites and include your city and country.
- Generational continuity: Share archival family photos in vyshyvankas alongside modern pictures to showcase the continuity of Ukrainian tradition.
- Cultural diplomacy: The UWC calls on communities to invite local politicians, journalists, and thought leaders to festive events. The vyshyvanka is a powerful advocacy tool that speaks to the world about Ukraine without words.
- Gifts of solidarity: Organizers encourage gifting vyshyvankas to international partners, supporters, and allies. Each embroidered shirt becomes a symbol of shared values, gratitude, and the global unity needed to maintain unwavering support for Ukraine.
