UWC vice president comments on Portuguese PM statement about Ukraine in the EU

The UWC regional vice president, Pavlo Sadokha from Portugal, commented on a statement by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa in which the latter warned against creating “false expectations” for Ukraine regarding its EU membership aspirations.

On CNN Portugal, Porto Canal, and TSF, Sadokha said, “The life proves that the ‘false prospects’ for thousands of Ukrainians and hundreds of Ukrainian children that have died at the hands of the Russian fascists were the assurances of peaceful dialogue with Moscovia. Granting the EU candidate status to Ukraine is, first and foremost, how the politicians in EU countries see their own future.”

According to CNN, Portugal’s prime minister has warned that the debate over whether to grant Ukraine candidacy status in the European Union could divide the bloc and create “false expectations.” He said that such a division would be a gift to Russian President Vladimir Putin. “My focus is to obtain in the next European Council a clear commitment on the urgent support and to build a long-term platform to support the recovery of Ukraine,” he was quoted as saying.

Costa also said that he did not explicitly oppose Ukraine’s candidacy, but that his priority was “clear and immediate support.”
