EU’s big mistake: Kuleba about lack of sanctions on Russia’s nuclear industry

The European Union states are making a big mistake by not imposing sanctions on the Russian nuclear sector, said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba. Kyiv is disappointed by the lack of EU proposals for new restrictions on Russia. In addition, Ukraine offered opportunities to get rid of this dependence, the minister added.

Kuleba believes the European Union’s indecision allows Russia to profit from the nuclear industry. “Ukraine, together with the Westinghouse company, proposed a solution that destroys Russia’s monopoly on fuel supply to nuclear power plants in the EU countries built by Russia and the Soviet Union. We put the fishing rod in the hands of the EU to catch the big fat sanctions fish Rosatom. But, unfortunately, we do not see this result yet,” Kuleba said.

Ukraine considers this approach of the European Union to be a mistake and “frankly” speaks about it, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized. In addition, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on European partners to work on the next package of sanctions and introduce restrictions against the Russian company Rosatom in the summer.

“The fact is that Rosatom is a leading player on the world market in terms of the chemical process of converting ore into nuclear fuel. There are only a few Western providers of nuclear fuel enrichment services, and they are not enough to replace supplies from Russia, Western states say,” the journalists of European Pravda said.
