NATO must fast-track Ukraine’s integration as Europe’s security situation deteriorates

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) calls on all NATO member states to fast-track Ukraine’s integration into the Alliance. This decision can and should be adopted at the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius on 11-12 July 2023.

Providing Ukraine with a clear and concrete accession plan would strengthen NATO globally. The deteriorating security situation in Europe due to Russia’s political instability is one more reason Ukraine needs a clear commitment to membership.

“Many were shocked by the short-lived rebellion of the terrorist Wagner Group in Russia. It symbolizes Russia’s instability and the power struggle among those that want to replace Putin. The absolute power of the Russian presidency is coveted by many Kremlin strongmen,” stated Paul Grod, UWC President.

 In their recent statements, the leaders of the Baltic states and Poland have many times emphasized that the general security situation in the east of Europe is deteriorating due to “Russia’s unpredictability” and that NATO should immediately consider “strengthening collective defense and deterrence, as well as border security in NATO’s eastern flank bordering Russia and Belarus.” As additionally stated in a recent joint statement by the speakers of the parliaments of the Baltic States, “the emergence of the Wagner mercenary group in Belarus could make the security situation on the eastern borders of NATO and the EU even more precarious.”

“Considering these increasing threats, Ukraine’s NATO membership is the Alliance’s best investment into the security of the military alliance. No other army has more direct experience fighting and defeating the Russian forces than Ukraine. Kyiv also has a unique understanding of Russia and Belarus, which will increase the Alliance’s capabilities,” Grod added.

On the eve of the NATO Vilnius Summit, the UWC calls on all Ukrainians and friends of Ukraine to:

  • organize rallies in support of Ukraine in the capitals of NATO member states and conduct outreach (download materials);
  • issue statements to the media with key messages (download);
  • send letters to NATO countries’ governments (download a sample);
  • share visual campaign materials on social media (download).
