Two more US states recognize Holodomor as genocide

Two more American states – Iowa and New York – have recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide against the Ukrainian people, as reported by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA, Oksana Markarova.

On November 17, the government of Iowa issued a proclamation on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor. In the document, Iowa recognized the mass famine of 1932-1933 as genocide against the Ukrainian people and declared November as the month of remembrance for the Holodomor genocide in Ukraine.

“We are sincerely grateful to Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds for solidarity with Ukraine. Thanks to the Consul General of Ukraine in Chicago Serhiy Koledov and the Ukrainian community for their active work in honoring the memory of the victims of the Holodomor,” Markarova wrote.

The state of New York recognized the Holodomor as genocide on November 18. The local government also issued the proclamation on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Holodomor, emphasizing once again the recognition of the Holodomor of 1932-33 as genocide against the Ukrainian people. November was declared the month of remembrance for the Ukrainian Holodomor genocide in Ukraine.

“We are very grateful to the Governor of the state of New York, Kathy Hochul, for her solidarity with Ukraine. Thank you to the team of the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York and the Ukrainian community for their active work in honoring the memory of the victims of the Holodomor,” Markarova wrote

The Ukrainian World Congress expresses gratitude to the Ukrainian community in the USA for their consistent civic activity and dedicated efforts in the process of recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide against Ukrainians.

Earlier, the states of Washington, Maryland, Arizona, and Wyoming recognized Holodomor as genocide. In total, 34 U.S. states have made this recognition. Additionally, approximately thirty countries worldwide, as well as the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, have acknowledged the mass famine of 1932–1933 as genocide. The memory of the victims of the Holodomors is commemorated in Ukraine and around the world on the fourth Saturday of November, this year on November 25th.

The Ukrainian World Congress calls on everyone to join the Holodomor-90 educational campaign. Materials, samples of letters, theses, videos, and banners are available for download at the link. There, you can also find out about commemorative events planned.
