On 3 September 2014 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij sent a briefing note on The Case for Military Assistance to Ukraine to NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the Leaders of NATO member countries for consideration during the NATO Summit being held on 4‑5 September 2014 in Newport, Wales.

Thousands of Russian troops are in Ukraine directly engaged in what is clearly an invasion and Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin has been emboldened by a slow and weak response from the Western countries as they have failed to implement the most difficult sanctions against Russia or provide the necessary military assistance for Ukraine to defend itself.

The Kremlin’s aggression in Ukraine can only be stopped with a strong and unwavering response from NATO and the G7 countries making it prohibitive for the Russian Federation to continue. This response should include decisive targeted sectoral sanctions, the political isolation of President Vladimir Putin and military support for Ukraine.

“We believe that now is the time for NATO and its members to enable Ukraine to defend itself by providing defensive military assistance to Ukraine,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.  “We commend NATO for taking decisive action in supporting Eastern European allies, but we call upon NATO not to abandon Ukraine and its people who have struggled so valiantly to achieve democracy and human dignity.  Unless Ukraine’s independence is upheld and territorial integrity is restored, the world will never enjoy global peace and security.”
