Ukrainian World Congress President delivers address

during unveiling of Holodomor monument in Winnipeg

On 21 September 2014 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij delivered an address during the unveiling of the Holodomor monument in Winnipeg, Canada.

During the ceremony, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba Philip Lee and Premier of Manitoba Greg Selinger extended greetings to the Ukrainian community on this important occasion.

Situated on the grounds of the Manitoba Legislature, the Holodomor monument, which depicts a young girl holding stalks of wheat, was blessed by Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church of Canada and Fr. Alexander Harkavyi of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Canada.

The monument was erected by the Holodomor Awareness and Education Committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba Provincial Council co-chaired by Irka Balan and Valya Noseworthy.

The Master of Ceremonies was the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Manitoba Provincial Council President Oksana Bodnarchuk.

“The Holodomor of 1932-33 is recognized as a genocide against the Ukrainian people by 16 countries in the world,” noted Eugene Czolij. “It took the lives of over 7 million Ukrainians.”

While in Winnipeg, the UWC President participated in the Annual General Meeting of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress where he extended greetings to representatives of the Manitoba Ukrainian community during the Bulava Awards banquet.
