Ukrainian World Congress urges international community

to act decisively in support of Ukraine’s sovereignty

On 6 March 2014 Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) President Eugene Czolij issued a letter to high‑ranking European officials urging the international community to maintain its steadfast support for the Ukrainian people and to act decisively against the military invasion of Ukraine by Russian Armed Forces that threatens Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The UWC President recognized theEuropean Parliament resolution of 27 February 2014 on the situation in Ukraine which reminds the Russian Federation of its obligations as a signatory to the 1994 Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances in connection with Ukraine’s accession to the Treaty on the Non‑Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons concerning the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

Among the UWC recommendations for specific action, Eugene Czolij emphasized the immediate need for an international observer mission to Eastern and Southern Ukraine, primarily to the Crimea; an international donors’ conference in Ukraine; sanctions on Russia if it does not respond to the numerous legitimate calls to comply with its international obligations; and an emergency G7 meeting in Ukraine to address the economic, social and security impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“The Ukrainian World Congress urges the international community to take concrete measures to force President Vladimir Putin to immediately remove Russian Armed Forces from the territory of Ukraine and debunk the myths being propagated by Russia’s governing authorities with respect to the current situation in Ukraine,” stated UWC President Eugene Czolij.
