PRESS RELEASE

UWC CONDEMNS RUSSIA’S ATTEMPT TO IMPEDE UKRAINE’S EU INTEGRATION

On May 27, 2011, in a letter addressed to high-ranking European officials, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) has condemned Russia’s clear attempt to impede the integration of Ukraine with the European Union (EU).

In its letter, the UWC pointed to recent mass media reports that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev stated that Ukraine must choose whether it wants close ties with Russia, or whether it wants to become a member of the EU.

The UWC also called upon the European officials to:

  1. make an official objection to the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for this divisive statement;

  2. reaffirm the EU’s commitment to working with Ukraine toward EU membership; and

  3. actively disseminate information to the Ukrainian people at the grassroots level on the benefits of joining the EU, since this message is not reaching them effectively.

The UWC letter was sent to:

а) European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek,

b) European Council President Herman Van Rompuy,

c) European Commission President José Manuel Barroso,

d) Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland,

e) Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu,

f)  the European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle,

g) the Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to the EU-Ukraine Parliamentary Cooperation CommitteePawel Kowal,

h) the Chair of the European Parliament Delegation to the EU-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee Knut Fleckenstein and

i)  the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Audronius Ažubalis.
