UWC WELCOMES THE DECISION TO SUSPEND THE REORGANIZATION OF


UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE SECTION ON RADIO UKRAINE INTERNATIONAL


 


On May 31, 2011, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) sent a letter to the Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, Yuriy Plaksiuk, welcoming his decision of May 30, 2011, to suspend the reorganization of the Ukrainian language section of Radio Ukraine International.  This was reported by the online publication Telekrytyka, citing remarks by the Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting: http://www.telekritika.ua/news/2011-05-30/63214.


As specifically noted in this publication: The Ukrainian World Congress called upon the Ukrainian authorities to cancel the decision to shut down the Ukrainian language section of Radio Ukraine International due to its importance as a source of information on national issues for Ukrainians living abroad.  This appeal was sent on May 26 to President Viktor Yanukovych, Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Volodymyr Lytvyn, and the Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine, Yuriy Plaksiuk.


With respect to the announcement by the Head of the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine that a committee would be struck to further review the isssue of the Ukrainian language section of Radio Ukraine International, the UWC requested that its recommendation for continuing the programming of the Ukrainian section be taken into account as it meets the informational and spiritual needs of the worldwide Ukrainian community.
