The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) warmly and wholeheartedly congratulates His Holiness Leo XIV on his election as the new Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and Head of the Holy See.
The election of the first-ever Pope from the United States marks a historic moment and highlights the universality and diversity of the Catholic Church. We recognize the wisdom of the Cardinals, who, guided by the Holy Spirit, selected a spiritual leader for billions of believers worldwide.
The UWC expresses deep respect for the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis, and his efforts to strengthen interfaith dialogue, promote peace, and advocate for justice around the globe. We are hopeful that His Holiness Leo XIV will continue these important initiatives, spreading messages of love, mercy, and hope.
At this pivotal moment, as the Ukrainian people stand bravely against the unjust aggression of Russia, we look to the newly elected Pope with great anticipation.
The UWC sincerely hopes that His Holiness Leo XIV will be a voice for peace for our long-suffering nation, calling for an end to the bloodshed and the restoration of a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
We believe that the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV will usher in an era of hope, unity, and mutual understanding, bringing inspiration not only to the Catholic community but to all people of goodwill. May his tenure be marked by a commitment to compassion, dialogue, and global solidarity.
Pope Leo XIV, born in 1955 in Chicago, USA, received his theological education and a licentiate in canon law in Rome. He spent much of his career as a missionary in South America, notably serving for ten years in Peru. From 2014 to 2023, he was the Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru. In September 2023, Pope Francis elevated him to the rank of cardinal. Pope Leo XIV is expected to continue the reforms set forth by his predecessor.
