UWC honors 20th anniversary of Ukraine’s Orange revolution

On Nov. 21, 2024, the Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) marks the 20th anniversary of the Orange Revolution — a defining moment that ignited Ukraine’s spirit of freedom, established its democratic foundations, and set the country on a pro-Western course toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

With our compatriots and global supporters, we honor the courageous Ukrainians who stood up to defend their rights and build a democratic, just, and prosperous nation.

The revolution was ignited by the fraudulent 2004 presidential election, where the Kremlin-backed Viktor Yanukovych attempted to steal victory through corruption and voter intimidation. In response, pro-democracy protesters rallied behind reformist Viktor Yushchenko, who survived an assassination attempt. From this struggle, the Orange Revolution was born, symbolizing hope and the fight for a free, democratic Ukraine. Ukraine’s Supreme Court, bowing to popular pressure, ordered a revote in December 2004, which ended with Yushchenko’s victory.

While the 2013-2014 Revolution of Dignity may have overshadowed it, the Orange Revolution was a defining moment in shaping Ukraine’s modern identity. It sparked national pride, reinforced European values, delivered a vibrant civil society, and set the stage for Ukraine’s democratic future.

The UWC stood alongside Ukrainians during this historic struggle, amplifying their voices globally. Ukrainian communities worldwide rallied for democracy and the rule of law. Today, UWC remains committed to Ukraine’s fight against Russian forces, whose goal is the destruction of the Ukrainian nation.

The legacy of the Orange Revolution shows that Ukraine’s freedom cannot be shattered — whether by Russian propaganda or by tanks and bombs.

Glory to Ukraine! Glory to its Heroes!
